Positioning is not what you say on your homepage. It is the decision your entire company makes about who you serve, what you refuse to do and why a customer should choose you over the alternative.
The three symptoms of weak positioning
Every proposal turns into a price negotiation. Weak positioning makes you look interchangeable, so buyers optimize on the one variable that is easy to compare — price.
Sales cycles keep extending. Buyers cannot tell what makes you different, so they gather more opinions, run more comparisons and take longer to decide.
Your team describes what you do differently in every meeting. If five people at your company give five different answers to what you do, buyers get five different answers too.
The four session rebuild
Session one: define the buyer. Not personas — the specific human, at a specific role, in a specific stage of a specific problem. Positioning that tries to speak to everyone speaks to no one.
Session two: define the alternatives. What does the buyer do today? Not just competitors — status quo, in house, spreadsheets, hire a junior. Position against the real alternative.
Session three: define the unique value. The one or two things you do meaningfully better than every alternative, for that specific buyer, in that specific context.
Session four: rewrite everything. Homepage, sales deck, onboarding, ad copy, careers page. Positioning only works if it shows up in every surface where the market meets you.

Frequently asked questions
How often should positioning be revisited?+
Formally, once every 18 to 24 months, or whenever you enter a new segment, launch a new product line or notice sales cycles lengthening. Positioning ages with the market.
Who should own positioning?+
The founder or CEO, with input from sales, marketing and product. It is not a marketing document — it is a company decision that marketing then expresses.
